I grew up going to church but not really understanding that I could have a personal relationship with God.  I believed God existed, and even went to church, but never involved Him in my day to day life.  When I was 15 years old, a cute boy invited me to his church.  There I learned again that I was sinful (I knew that much!), that God was Holy and couldn’t look on sin, and that is why Jesus chose to die on a cross to take the penalty for sin upon Himself.

I made a decision that day that I needed to accept the forgiveness Christ offers for my sin, and allow Him to take over my life.  This made a huge difference from just believing God exists, to actually starting a personal relationship with Him.

I dusted off my Bible and started reading it.  For the first time, it really made sense.  I spent time each day talking to God and asking Him to use my life in any way He could. My parents had just gotten divorced and I had been really struggling to accept the changes. Becoming a Christian didn’t mean I wouldn’t have anymore problems, but that I would always have my Savior to go through those problems with me. Being a Christian is an amazing journey of peace and joy, no matter the circumstances.  The peace comes from knowing a loving God is in control of everything that happens, and has a reason for it.  As well as knowing that someday I will spend eternity in heaven, not because of any of the “good things” I do here on earth though.  It is only because I have been forgiven of my sin and trusted Jesus as my Savior that my eternity is secure.
This is backed up in the Bible by:

  • Romans 3:23 “ For All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”
  • Romans 6:23 “For the wages(or penalty) of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
  • Romans 5:8 “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.”
  • Romans 10:9-10 “If you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
  • Ephesians 2:8-9 “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-not by works, so that no one can boast.”

This gift is for ANYONE who chooses to believe.
